The DIXIE CLIPPER inaugurated the first transatlantic airplane passenger service on June 28, 1939 leaving from Port Washington terminal, Manhasset Bay, Long Island Sound. It still ranks as one of the most luxurious airliners of all time. The giant flying boat provided first-class service, with hot meals, to its 40 berthed passengers. A total of 12 planes, including the "Yankee Clipper", "California Clipper" and "Atlantic Clipper" flew routes to the major ports around the world.
