Classic Collection - Skipjack

1.800.356.1987

skipjack_lg.jpg

Today, Maryland's Skipjacks represent the last fleet of commercial vessels in North America under sail. But the few remaining Skipjacks are as likely to be used for recreation as for work. By the end of the 1800s oyster harvests had been greatly reduced. It was time to design a boat that could harvest oysters in shallow waters. The Skipjack was born.

Its nearly flat bottom and retractable centerboard allowed the Skipjack to go almost anywhere. She was also easy to handle. According to legend, the graceful sloop was named for a fish because of its lively movement and ability to skim over surface waters. Its namesake is thought to be the bluefish.

In 1983, twenty-two Skipjacks were placed in the National Register of Historic Places. On July 1, 1985 the Skipjack was proclaimed Maryland’s official state boat. A Skipjack stamp was issued by the U. S. Postal Service to commemorate Maryland’s bicentennial in 1988.
