Tall Ship Mystic

1.800.356.1987

mystic_lg.jpg

In all aspects of 19th century New England fisheries probably the most distinctive and colorful was the Gloucester mackerel purse seiner with its specialized gear, its exacting and carefully-timed techniques. Fast, handsome schooners were built specially for seasonal work. Speed was of the greatest importance in cleaning and salting the catch as it spoils quickly. The vessel had to get the fish to market in the shortest possible time.

The schooner MYSTIC was built in 1877 and confined her activities to mackerel fishing and was probably laid up in the winter.

The model of this two masted schooner has a wide long low hull with a pointed bow designed for speed. She is painted a rich forest green and dark rust. There are scores of finely carved deck details and fittings to enjoy - especially appealing are the two small fishing dories. Her intricate rigging will heighten your enjoyment of this true American classic.
